equinox

equanimity

This afternoon saw the occurence of the autumnal equinox, one of two brief moments of the year during which the centre of the sun aligns itself directly above the equator (the supposed middle of the Earth), and when day and night are commonly believed to be of equal length. Some even say that an egg will balance on its pointier end on this day, while during the rest of the year it won't.

To me, it's a day for contemplating the equality of things and the middle way, for understanding what centredness is and trying to become centred. I like these words - middle, equal, centre, balance - and I try to make what they signify a big part of the way I live my life.
